HopBack Sweeps the Leviathan, 3-0
Here’s how we called today’s match:
Brad: I personally love both of these beers, and would really like to advance both of them. Personal preference aside, however, this is about voting for the better all around beer in order to determine the best beer in America, and the only real difference I see is in drinkability. That is why I am voting for the Troegs HopBack Amber Ale. Both beers are very complex and a joy to sample, but the Harpoon Leviathan is very strong, to the point of being overpowering, where the HopBack has a much wider range of appeal due to its flavors which are not as polarizing. I’d like to thank Harpoon though for putting together some incredible beers for the tournament, and wish Troegs the best of luck in the Round of 16.
John: Today was once again an example where I wish I could vote for both beers in the match. Both beers today were relatively even in the pros and cons departments – both beers were certainly memorable and unique, but I felt as if they both faltered (if ever so slightly) in each example of their style. The deciding factor for me was the balanced and well-rounded nature of the Troegs HopBack Amber Ale, my vote for today.
Fans: We came into the last day of voting for today’s match expecting to see some type of swing one way or another, but the margin stayed pretty constant throughout the day. It seems almost every vote for the Leviathan was matched by the Troegs HopBack Amber Ale, which took today’s match with 57% of the popular vote.
